The Government instituted the Anna Medal for Gallantry to be conferred on the Civilians and Government servants for conspicuous act of bravery. The following rules and guidelines were issued for the selection of the awardees for the Anna medal for gallantry:-
(i) The award shall be in the form of a Medal and named as the “Anna Medal for gallantry”.
(ii) The medal will be circular in shape made of silver with gold coating (having 3/3” diameter). The cost of the medal shall be Rs.5,000/- (Rupees five thousand only).
(iii) In addition to the medal, a cash certificate for Rs.1.00 lakh (Rupees one lakh only) will also be given to the recipient.
(iv) The medals shall be awarded to any civilian irrespective of age for conspicuous gallantry in saving life, property etc.
(v) The recommendations of the Collectors for the awards shall be placed before the Selection Committee. The recommendation of the Committee should reach the Government in the Public Department not later than 15th December every year.
In G.O.Ms.No.734, Public (General-I) Department, dated 01.04.1986, it was ordered that the number of medals awarded in a year shall be six (three medals for general public and three medals for Government servants).
The medals will be presented to the awardees by the Chief Minister during the Republic Day Celebrations at Marina, Chennai on 26th January every year.
